Thursday, November 19th 2020, members of BPG’s Diversity and Inclusion Group (DIG), piloted “Footsteps to Freedom” a walking tour that will act as the foundation/launching point for providing BPG associates with a working knowledge of local and state history as it relates to the Underground Railroad and connected topics. By sharing stories, about the Quaker Legacy in Wilmington, Thomas Garrett, and Harriet Tubman, tour guide, Ashley B. Cloud, Executive Director of non-profit, Quaker Hill Historic Preservation Foundation (QHHPF) set the stage for future discussions and continued conversations grounded in our hometown of Wilmington, DE.

The beginning of the tour started at Wilmington Friends Meeting House, located at 401 N West St, Wilmington, DE 19801 set in Wilmington’s historic Quaker Hill – home to countless people who have dedicated their lives to improving the community and society at large. Among those buried at Wilmington Friends Meeting are John Dickinson, signer of the Constitution, and Thomas Garrett, an abolitionist who worked with William Still and Harriet Tubman to conduct thousands of slaves to freedom. Additional stops included, Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park and Fort Christina Park.

I am proud and honored to be a part of what you [BPG] are doing and I commend BPG for striving to be a fully “woke” community partner,” says Quaker Hill Historic Executive Director, Ashley B. Cloud.

Quaker Hill has been home to countless people who have dedicated their lives to improving the community and society at large. Since 1992 QHHPF has committed to aid in the restoration and preservation of the Quaker Hill Historic District in Wilmington, Delaware and in this tradition, the QHHPF Foundation strives to foster a growing appreciation of the rich social history and unique architecture of Wilmington’s oldest residential neighborhood.

We look forward to collaborating on more activities with QHHPF in the future including book discussion, lectures and tours.
